IN HER OWN VOICE

Poetry lives not only on the page, but also in breath, silence, and sound.

On the lip of night
a heron
beside a bygone tractor
A rusted call
a sweep of wing to break the seal of years

Tucked into the hillock beyond
someone lies in bed
Malic scents of spring
wag the tails of his dogs
The waking earth can almost taste the tiller

What need has he of old machinery
Cankered hopes
the must of grief
engines all their own
